from the latest GD Monthly Flash:
QUESTION and ANSWER DEPARTMENT
This months' question was passed to our Archivist, David Lemieux: "Will you ever release a complete 'Evening with the Grateful Dead' concert from 1970 - 1971, i.e., the New Riders of the Purple Sage and the two Grateful Dead sets?"
"The answer would be that this is something that we would examine the next time 1970 - 1971 comes up for Dick's Picks consideration (and, of course, if the tape existed of the New Riders' set). Some of these NRPS sets are excellent, and I have a good relationship with the NRPS's archivist, so this is something that would be feasible to consider when the time comes. " David Lemieux
I can be reached with comments or questions at lemieux@dead.net and I welcome your input. I won't be able to respond to all emails, but I will take all comments into consideration. David Lemieux

That would be interesting, although I wonder how many of the "Evening With..." shows are intact enough to be released as a whole.
On the topic of buying every pick-- I'm in the camp that picks and chooses which picks to buy. There's no way I'd be listening to the 9.91, 12.92, 5.78, or 11.85 picks, so why buy 'em? The GD have fleeced me plenty of times over the years... no more. And to be honest, I'd be trading these various circulating recordings regardless if the band approved or not. On the other hand, if the band releases what I consider to be a great pick, even if it's a show I have already obtained through circles like DNC, I'm all for getting the definitive version.
Possible pick suggestion of the day- I'm not a big '77 proponent at all, but seeing as its turn is probably rolling around again within the next couple of picks, I'd be willing to purchase something like this:
Dick's Picks Vol. xx, March 18th & 19th, 1977, Winterland Arena, San Francisco
D1: -From 3.18- Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain ; Terrapin Station > At a Siding Jam > Drums > Not Fade Away > Saint Stephen > Around And Around ; Uncle John's Band
D2: -From 3.18- Sugaree; -From 3.19- Estimated Prophet ; Terrapin Station > Playing In The Band > Samson And Delilah > Playing In The Band
D3: -From 3.19- Eyes Of The World > Space > Dancing In The Street > Wharf Rat > Franklin's Tower > Sugar Magnolia ; One More Saturday Night
Worthy for the 3.18 first Scarlet> Fire, the Terrapin which is closest to the album version, the Caution hints during NFA. 3.19 has the oustanding Playin' sandwich & the long set II jam.

There is some good stuff in 3-18 & 19.
I think however we are way overdue (19 picks and counting) for a 1970 release.

11/8/70 would make a fine Evening with the Grateful Dead, if only the thing was in the vault!!!

I know I am going to stir up some flaming on this one, but I am not "obligated" to buy anything. In times like these, $20 is a lot of money to spend on one release of music that I already own. It is MY money to spend and, if I don't want to buy a particular pick because I already have a good copy of it, then I won't. If a release really excites me, like "Go to Nassau," I will gladly purchase it, not out of obligation, but out of sheer enjoyment. Release a product that excites me and I will purchase it - bottom line. I am not a fan of Pigpen-era Dead, so I don't buy those releases (yea, I know I am a heretic). "Go to Nassau," "Dozin' at the Knick," "Nightfall of Diamonds," "Terrapin Station (Cap Center '90)," those are all from my favorite era of Dead music, the Brent years, so I purchased all of them as soon as they were available. It boils down to how much I desire the product, not my obligation as a deadhead.

LOGAN!!!! SCRAPE TOGETHER THE MONEY AND BUY DP8. JUST DO IT. YOU WILL BE FLOORED. THE HEAVENS WILL OPEN UP. SPANISH LADY WILL COME TO YOU AND GIVE YOU ROSE. IT RAINBOW SPIRALS ROUND AND ROUND AND TREMBLES AND EXPLODES... BUY THIS RELEASE!!! YOU WILL BE LEFT DROOLING...
I am not a fan of Pigpen-era Dead, so I don't buy those releases (yea, I know I am a heretic).
GASP!!! Stone him, stone him!!! ;^)
I think we are obligated to buy the improved releases. To me it's a good investment. Despite the fact that most of us who have 8/6/74 have it in fairly decent condition, it is doubtful your copy is DIRECT from the curators of the vault. So to me it is an incredible bargain.
We are obligated as tape collectors to put a little back to the band who has opened up its music for all to enjoy. By giving back to this wonderful band, we ensure good relations and continued support of the taper community.
I don't know about you folks, but if I had an officially released version of 8/6/74 I'd toss my current copy out in a heartbeat.

My main point was that I will continue to support the band, but like most of us, I have to watch where my pennies go, so I pick and choose what releases I buy. I can guarantee that I will be buying VFTV 4 on April 8th, maybe the soundtracks, too.
OWWWWWW - stop throwing stones! I need some help from a Brent-head!! Mr. 86, Chez, HEEEEEELPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!
