In the beginning, there was ... sobriety.
Anyone have a copy of Merl's self-titled 1974 album on vinyl?

Drowned in your laughter and dead to the core.
from Photographer Marjorie Beers King, born 1921, died 2002. She was just about the first "Dead Head."

That looks like Florida. Most of the other shows in May 1969 were indoors.

In the beginning, there was ... sobriety.
Can you digitize it? I am hoping to get a copy. I only just noticed the other day that it has "Ain't Now Woman Like the One I Got" and "When I Die", two of the instrumentals that Jerry and Merl played together (though not on the album). I would like to hear some of the other tunes to see if they are represented in the live repertoire.

I am thinking I may need to get a record player for myself ... vinyl is fun.

A dime for a cup of coffee?!?
jjoops, any light on that other keyboardist issue? There is a British keyboard player named Tim Hinkley, whom Hopkins absolutely would have known well. Sounds like a certain possibility.
Played with Sonny Boy Williamson, Al Stewart, Humble Pie, Stones, The Who, Roger Chapman, Whitesnake (Schabs!!) a.o.

Interesting theory, AtS. I looked at his credits...
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&searchlink=TIM|HINKLEY&sql=11:0nfuxqt5ldfe~T4
Nothin' that would indicate he did any work in the U.S., but maybe he came over "on holiday" (as the Brits like to say) and Nicky hooked him up with the J-Man...

A dime for a cup of coffee?!?
According to the Wiki entry, he worked as backing musician for SBW, Lee Dorsey, Carla Thomas and Ben E King. Probably (possibly) meant he did some US touring.
Pretty extensive list of credits in any case.

And yes Schabs, the name Hinkley rang a bell from.. wait for it.. the first Whitesnake albums. ;^)
Seems he also played on Pete Sinfield's (King Crimson) solo record, had no idea about that and that album is one of my favorites! And on Tom Waits' Closing Time. And (( Thin Lizzy's Chinatown ))

I think the Heavy Turbulence album (available on the "Fire Up" CD) may have been digitally edited as well, even within tracks.

In the beginning, there was ... sobriety.
Not Tim Hinkley. Here was has reply to me:
Sorry to tell you that the mysterious keyboard player is not myself.
The only time I ever shared a stage with Gerry Garcia was at Bickershaw, Yorkshire, England around 1968/9 when the Grateful Dead topped the third days bill. I was playing with Al Stewart at the time. and we jammed sometime during the Dead's very lengthy set.
There is a keyboard player, Ken Hensley. Ken was the keyboard player with the English heavy rock band, Uriah Heep and I believe he now lives in Switzerland.
You may want to try to track him down.
I assume the Bickershaw reference is to '72. Has anyone ever detected additional keyboards during the long jam of that show?

Embrace the douche.
I also see at least three Fender (Dual?) Showman amps behind there. They're so clean & shiny!

Drat, the trail grows cold again...It definitely sounds like "Tim Hensley" on whichever show that he's introduced is...
